Sophia's Wild First Birthday Party!

Happy birthday to our darling daughter, I can't believe that you are one years old already! Time has flown by so quickly! You are amazing and grow and change everyday. Its so exciting to see what you'll know tomorrow.

Just this last week, Sophia has starting signing at least five new signs, she can point out some things in books (ball, fish, starfish!) she has been saying the beginnings of words outside of mama, dada and duh - dog (bruh = brush, ba = ball and more!) She has been trying fun finger foods like pizza, jello, turkey slices, ham and buttered toast. She is becoming an expert at the straw tippy cups. She moves everywhere (really fast) with her modified crawl, the scooting crab walk. She has just started standing and hovering on her own and I'm guessing we aren't far from walking. She has even learned how to go down stairs from her cousin, Addison!

We had a great time having company this last week - cousins Laura, Matt, Justin and Kristin visited us for Sophia's birthday. Thank you Laura for all of your help throughout the week, Sophia loved playing with you. Sophia REALLY loved playing with Addison (two-years old). She followed her everywhere! She learned volumes from her in just one week of playing! I can't wait for those two to get together again!

Now for the main event. Sophia was born at 6:44 in the morning on June 26th, 2009. She woke up shortly before her birth time, I was feeding her breakfast and I swear that in looking at her, I saw a noticable change at 6:44 am. We sung Happy Birthday to her and befre I knew it, I was looking at a one-year old. I can't belive it. We got dressed up for the day and took some first birthday pictures from our amazingly talented Aunt Laura (I can't wait to see them!). A quick morning nap (thank you Laura and Justin for watching Sophia while we set up the pavillion) and off to the birthday party.

When I took her out of the car, she looked like a little angel in her white and pink poka-dot dress. She quickly pointed to her party and said "oh-oh-oh" and was very excited. We went from person to person to show off the beautiful birthday girl and to check out the huge pile of presents. She was even more excited about those presents. I'm pretty sure she LOVES birthday parties! Alas, we had to wait to enjoy those presents and had some good BBQ and conversation with lots of friends and family (thank you to all who came to celebrate our very special little girl, we all felt quite loved).

Then it was time for cake and presents. Grammy Debbie makes the most magical cakes. She pretty much makes any outlandish thing you request, she is THAT talented. So our request for Sophia was an adorable monkey cake (to go with the Wild Animal theme) and a small banana cake for just Sophia. We put on the birthday hat, sang Happy Birthday to Sophia, and although taken aback from the attention, she liked the singing and the cake. We blew out the candle for her, just because she was very curious as to what fire felt like. She was pretty timid about trying the cake - she daintily touched the cake and we tried feeding her some of the frosting, she did like it but didn't go all in on it. She had more fun mushing the cake and frosting between her fingers and putting some in her hair :) She really enjoyed putting the cake on Mommy and in her hat.

Then it was time for presents, we laid out a big beach blanket on the ground and spread out her presents in front of her. We all had a great time opening presents. Sophia had an even better time opening presents after cousin Addison came down to show her how to do it. She was really excited about that and started really playing with some of the toys. We have a huge bundle of toys (thank you everyone!) and we are giving her one package a day to open and play with all over again so that she doesn't get overwhelmed and gets to enjoy each gift!

A quick three hours later, the party was over, the birthday girl (and her parents) were ready for a big nap. We packed up the car full of goodies and went home. Sophia had a great first birthday and so did we - thank you to everyone there and all of those that were thinking of us, we love and appreciate you all!
